Michael Buckingham

Mr. Buckingham joined Pontem Energy Capital in 2023 to focus on private equity investments in the Oil & Gas sector. 

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Buckingham spent six years at Waterous Energy Fund, where he was the #2 hire and helped to develop a value-based investment strategy for the North American Oil & Gas sector.  As a Managing Director at Waterous, he played a key role in raising and investing over $1.5 billion to build Strathcona Resources through numerous acquisitions and M&A transactions.  Strathcona is now one of the largest private E&P companies in North America and produces 160,000 barrels per day.  Mr. Buckingham has 18 years of experience as an investor and advisor to the energy industry, including working as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley, Lazard and UBS. 

Mr. Buckingham earned a B.A. from UCLA and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.  Prior to business school, he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corp and the U.S. Foreign Service.
